| Armagh U15 (28) vs Coleraine U15 (05) |
28 Apr 2013 |
 |

City of Armagh Under 15’s finished of a marvellous season by winning the plate competition in Cookstown last Saturday. This was a team that only lost 3 matches all season, Monaghan in the league, against Coleraine in the semi-final playoffs and Banbridge in the cup.
In the league semi-final Armagh went down to a strong Coleraine side, but the local lads gained sweet revenge by hammering the same Coleraine side 28 points to 5 on Saturday!
The signs did not look good when after 5 minutes Coleraine scored a try in the corner after Armagh’s defence failed to clear the danger. Armagh, however, bounced back with a converted try of their own when Evin Crummie surged over the try line after some excellent back play.
Cormac Fox converted and then 5 minutes later extended Armagh’s lead with an excellent solo try . Armagh had been awarded
a penalty 40 metres out and Cormac took the decision to run it . He caught the Coleraine defence so flat footed Cormac stormed over under the posts for another converted try!
It was all Armagh at this time and it was no surprise that they extended their lead when Kyle Maguire lurking in the backline show great pace and commitment to waltz over for another converted try. Coleraine were not for giving up and their strong running centre needed 3 or 4 Armagh lads to tackle him.
Half-time saw the score Armagh 21 Coleraine 05.
After a good strong team talk from Armagh coach, Anton Finn, Armagh continued in similar vein in the second half and repelled Coleraine on every occasion. Their defence was solid and it never really looked as if it would be breached. It wasn’t easy as Coleraine through everything at Armagh.
The locals lads could have added to their score on a number of occasions but the final pass was surpisingly knocked on. Ten minutes from the end Neil McGuiness calmed all the Armagh supporters’ nerves when he broke through several tackles to score a fine individual try under the posts. Cormac as usual converted to leave the final score Armagh 28 Coleraine 5.
It would be wrong to single out any individual in this team as they all were stars not only in the final but throughout the year. They attended training without fail and even the likes of Sam and Jake Odour new to rugby this year, travelled form Aughnacloy twice a week. We should however spare a thought for Brendan Gribben who missed out on the final through injury.
The rugby club should also like to mention their thanks to the coach Anton and his wife Briege and the parents who regularly turned up to help out. Without their support this team would not have achieved what it did and these lads will have great memories of the 2012/2013 season.

| Youth Reports vs Newry |
09 Mar 2013 |
 |
Armagh under 13s maintained their excellent season by hammering Newry 62-nil
in the second round stages of the Cup. Playing a lovely brand of running
rugby, they are a joy to watch and some of their back play is of such a high
standard, that older [players should come down and see for themselves the
passing and movement. There are a few stars in this team but it is unfair to
single out anyone in particular. They have a very aggressive pack which
scrummage and ruck very well and the lines of running in the backs is
excellent. They scored some magnificent tries especially the scores from
Tiernan O.Neil who has only recently taken up rugby and the control of the
half-backs Nathan Rodgers and Rory Hughes always has the team going forward.
The backs and forwards combined perfectly to score 10 tries, five of which
were converted by Rory Hughes, Armagh have now qualified for the quarter
finals but their opponents are not yet known.
The 15s also bounced back from their defeat last week against Banbridge to
also win 62-0 against a Newry side that has only been beaten once this
season. Coach Anton Finn was very disappointed last week and also was
slightly surprised at the low numbers at training last week and had stern
words for the side which obviously motivated them to their best win of the
season. Star finishers were Sam Odour with 4 tries and Chris Lowry with 3
tries but the whole side played well as a unit to allow them to participate
in the shield competition. It is also very pleasing to record that 2
players Kyle Maguire and Chris Lowry are in the South Region under 16 squad
and 7 players Neill McGuiness, Pearce Lennon, Cormac Fox, Pat Quigley, Paul
Mullan, Barry Finn and Jordan Falloon are still in the South Regional Squad
for under 15s especially when they are not from traditional rugby playing
schools.
The 17s have surprised everyone recently by winning their two cup games to
qualify for the premier cup competition and they too won 39-5 against a big
Newry side at the Palace. For the first time this season the boys seem to
be playing for each other and they are really gelling as a unit. Their half
backs Aaron Fox and Cillian Harney are really combining well now and
controlling the possession from the forwards to allow their strong running
backs Robbie Gazeck and Rauiri Quinn to punch holes for tries. Credit for
turning the fortunes of this side around should be given to Mark Riddle,
coaches Gareth Warnock and Dougie. Manager Philip Agnew deserves great
praise for getting the side out each week and these boys are starting to
really pull together. They are looking forward to a good draw in the
quarter finals. |
