Mini Rugby Codes Of Conduct For Coaches / Helpers

01st September 2008

  • As a coach of primary school age you act in "loco parentis" and your duty of care is more onerous than that of a coach to an adult team.

  • Children need a coach who they can respect. Lead by example.

  • Be generous with praise when deserved. Never ridicule or shout at players for making mistakes.

  • Teach your players that the laws of the game are to be respected and observed at all times.

  • Be reasonable in your expectations - you are coaching children.

  • Ensure that all players of whatever skill level can participate in matches appropriate to their ability.

  • Young players are playing for fun and to improve their skills - winning is not the only objective.

  • Players should be encouraged to respect their opponents and their coaches.

  • Players should be encouraged to respect the referee. Never criticise the referee or touch-judge during or after a match in front of players or spectators. Always thank the official(s).

  • Insist on fair and disciplined play . Do not tolerate foul play , fighting or foul language . Be prepared to take off an offending player.

  • Set realistic goals . Do not push players beyond their skill level or their state of maturity. Seek and follow the advice of a doctor in determining if an injured player is ready to play again.

  • Create a safe and enjoyable environment in which to train and play and ensure that proper equipment and facilities are available at all times.

  • Make a personal commitment to keep yourself informed on sound coaching principles and methods.
