Ladies Season Comes To An End 10 May 2013

Friday night, at City of Armagh Rugby Club, saw the finale of the Under 18 Ladies' season. Requests from Enniskillen and Monaghan for matches encouraged the club to host one more event. Enniskillen requested Tag rugby and Monaghan, who have just got through to the final of the Rugby Community Games, wanted a full contact match.

33 girls played and the weather was unusually favourable. Armagh Ladies played Contact against Monaghan and then both these teams played Tag against Enniskillen. A BBQ followed, with buns and cake, kindly sponsored by Johnston's Bakery.

The guests left enthusing about the outstanding Armagh hospitality, something the Club has been renowned for over many years. We wish Monaghan every success in their final and hope to meet both teams in the next rugby season.

Armagh U15 (28) vs Coleraine U15 (05) 28 Apr 2013

City of Armagh Under 15’s finished of a marvellous season by winning the plate competition in Cookstown last Saturday. This was a team that only lost 3 matches all season, Monaghan in the league, against Coleraine in the semi-final playoffs and Banbridge in the cup.

In the league semi-final Armagh went down to a strong Coleraine side, but the local lads gained sweet revenge by hammering the same Coleraine side 28 points to 5 on Saturday!

The signs did not look good when after 5 minutes Coleraine scored a try in the corner after Armagh’s defence failed to clear the danger. Armagh, however, bounced back  with a converted try of their own when Evin Crummie surged over the try line after some excellent back play.

Cormac Fox converted and then 5 minutes later extended Armagh’s lead with an excellent solo try . Armagh had been awarded
a penalty 40 metres out and Cormac took the decision to run it . He caught the Coleraine defence so flat footed Cormac stormed over under the posts for another converted try!

It was all Armagh at this time and it was no surprise that they extended their lead when Kyle Maguire lurking in the backline show great pace and commitment to waltz over for another converted try. Coleraine were not for giving up and their strong running centre needed 3 or 4 Armagh lads to tackle him.

Half-time saw the score Armagh 21 Coleraine 05.

After a good strong team talk from Armagh coach, Anton Finn, Armagh continued in similar vein in the second half and repelled Coleraine on every occasion. Their defence was solid and it never really looked as if it would be breached. It wasn’t easy as Coleraine through everything at Armagh.

The locals lads could have added to their score on a number of occasions but the final pass was surpisingly knocked on. Ten minutes from the end Neil McGuiness calmed all the Armagh supporters’ nerves when he broke through several tackles to score a fine individual try under the posts. Cormac as usual converted to leave the final score Armagh 28 Coleraine 5.

It would be wrong to single out any individual in this team as they all were stars not only in the final but throughout the year. They attended training without fail and even the likes of Sam and Jake Odour new to rugby this year, travelled form Aughnacloy twice a week. We should however spare a thought for Brendan Gribben who missed out on the final through injury.

The rugby club should also like to mention their thanks to the coach Anton and his wife Briege and the parents who regularly turned up to help out. Without their support this team would not have achieved what it did and these lads will have great memories of the 2012/2013 season.

Provincial Rugby Comes to Armagh 21 April 2013

Sunday the 21st of April saw a festival of ladies’ rugby in the south of the Province. Ulster U18 ladies regional development squads had been training for several months. Camps were based between the East and West of Ulster with a culmination of a head to head match between the two.

Armagh Power NI 3 (15) vs Ballymena 5 (19) 21 Apr 2013

Saturday saw City of Armagh Power NI 3rds meet Ballymena 5th’s in the final of the Forster Cup at Ravenhill.

Cup finals always hold a special magic but this occasion held a certain extra sparkle for Saturday’s game. Firstly to see the Ravenhill stadium improvements underway with the concrete grandstands rising up behind the hoardings was indeed impressive. Secondly to be able to watch rugby without shivering is a pleasure long... View News

Colin Atkinson, Armagh’s assistant coach for the past three seasons has made it known that he will be leaving the Palace Grounds to take up a post as senior coach with Belfast side, Cooke, at the end of this season.

City of Armagh 3XV Reach Forster Cup Final 15 Apr 2013

This Saturday City of Armagh Third XV will be playing at Ravenhill in the final of the Foster Cup.

Not many people know that this cup was donated by Jacob Foster, president of Armagh Rugby Club from 1955-1965 so it would be a great thrill to see it's return to Armagh since it was last won in 1988.

We wish the team the best of luck against Ballymena RFC. Note the kick-off this Saturday is for 1-00pm!

What an amazing weekend of Mini and Youth rugby at City of Armagh RFC. On Saturday, over 1000 players of primary school age took to the pitches and put on a great show of enthusiasm and no little skill.

This was followed by a Province-wide Under 18 Ladies blitz on Sunday. Five clubs attended with 65 girls playing both Tag and Contact rugby in fine weather. Spoils went to Malone and Belfast Harlequins, with individual awards going to Letterkenny, Finn Valley and Armagh.

3 of Ireland's Grand Slam Winners were present to enjoy this festival of Ladies' Rugby, and brought along the Triple Crown Trophy to show to the gathered throng. Instonians (08) vs City of Armagh (38) 09 Mar 2013

What a difference a week makes! Last Saturday Ciyt of Armagh played their fixture against Thomond RFC in almost perfect conditions on a hard, dry, pitch surrounded by a galvanised stockade in a socially deprived area of Limerick.

The heroes who run Thomond RFC have to be congratulated for putting out a very gritty side in what must be the most challenging conditions seen in Irish Club Rugby! Saturday’s match against Instonians, however, was played in what can only be described at best as filthy conditions! The glorious...  View News

Thomond (12) vs City of Armagh (20) 02 Mar 2013

Limerick – A witty poem, with a strict rhythm scheme with humorous intent.

Another definition, however, is a Munster city of 91,000 populations which currently supports no less than 14 rugby clubs.

Armagh visited one of these honoured clubs, Thomond RFC, on Saturday to play their fixture in the Ulster Bank All-Ireland league. Anyone who has played, supported or just watched their televisions has heard of Thomond. That would, no doubt, have referred to the home of the European champions and Irish provincial side, Munster.

Their enormous, iconic stadium...  View News

City of Armagh (28) vs Naas (13) 23 Feb 2013

Armagh Rugby Girls in Ulster Development Squad 18 Feb 2013

City of Armagh Under 18 Ladies have now selected four of their players to go forward to the Regional Ulster Development Squad. Congratulations go to Niamh McCord, Laura Donnelly, Faye Nugent and Rachel Totten, who will be training with girls Province-wide, before a final Ulster team selection is made.

As a newly formed section of the Club, it is a credit to the commitment of the coaching staff and the Girls on the pitch to have players meeting this standard so early in their development.

To further this development, City of Armagh Ladies also hope to host a squad from St Mary's RFC from Limerick before the end of the season, as well as attending further home and away Rugby Festivals. Details of these will follow.

If you are interested in playing Under 18 Ladies Rugby, having fun or just simply getting fit, contact Zoe Templeton on 07706750058 or Shirley-anne Donaldson on 07754603868, or come along to training on Mondays 7pm to 8pm.

Armagh U18 Ladies Excel in Letterkenny 17 Feb 2013

Fifteen Under 18 Ladies travelled to Letterkenny on Sunday, to do battle with teams from Letterkenny RFC and Finn Valley RFC. Under the expert tutelage of Mark Riddle, Philip Fletcher and Dylan Ferreira the Girls had a very successful day. First up were Letterkenny in a "touch" match.

Armagh emerged victorious from a very close contest, with the Girls having to play at their best to overcome a very competent home team. A "full contact" match against Letterkenny ended in another win for the Girls from Armagh, with Rachel Totten and Victoria Irwin particularly outstanding.

Among the try scorers were Gabrielle Fox, Laura Henderson and Laura Donnelly with great offloads from Ciara Hawes. When under pressure, the defence stood firm with Rosie Callaghan and Niamh McCord putting in some great tackles.

The day concluded with a mixed Armagh/Letterkenny team playing a very strong team from Finn Valley. After a ding-dong contest, the honours were shared and the Armagh Girls headed home unbeaten.

Everyone played with spirit and lots of skill and can look back at their contribution with pride. City of Armagh Ladies would like to take this opportunity to thank Jeremy Worth and his team of helpers at Letterkenny for their warm welcome and excellent hospitality.

City of Armagh (13) vs Barnhall (19) 16 Feb 2013

The only side to genuinely dominate City of Armagh last season was Barnhall when they travelled into Leinster to play on the university grounds in Maynooth.

Virtually a solid week’s rain had rendered the Palace .rounds sticky but playable. Prior to the fixture Barnhall topped the league’s scoring tally with 329 points.

On the other hand, Armagh’s excellent defensive record indicated that they had only ley 99 points pass them to date! City of Armagh kicked off with a slight breeze at their backs from the Palace end. Within two minutes play Barnhall knocked-on  View News

Bill then also served as Club President between 1967-1969.

http://www.justgiving.com/CrossTeam - Click to donate.

We are taking this opportunity to invite you to donate some of your hard earned cash to support City of Armagh Rugby Club past president Andrew Nesbitt and his team, including Daphne Greer and Randal McAllister as they take up their charity challenge for Save the Children.

The Cross Group Team are joining a group of friends and colleagues from Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioning on a charity challenge marathon cycle in Vietnam to raise some much needed funds for Save The Children, the group will be cycling from Saigon in Vietnam to Angkor Wat in Cambodia over a six day period covering a distance of 500km, this will be a massive personal challenge for all the team and the target for the group is to raise £55,000 for Save The Children, with the Cross Group goal set to raise a total of £10,000. And the good news is 100% of your generous donations will go directly to ‘Save the Children’ fund.

£580 could provide enough nutrient-rich food to help 20 children suffering from severe malnutrition

£100 could train a health worker to diagnose illnesses and treat sick children

£50 could pay for 25 blankets to keep babies suffering from deadly pneumonia warm

8.5 million children were helped directly by Save the Children in 2011

The team look forward to receiving lots of generous donations for ‘Save The Children’ from our kind friends, suppliers, customers and colleagues over the coming months and would like to thank everyone on behalf of the Cross Group and ‘Save The Children’ for all your very generous contributions.

Andrew Nesbitt – “I’m really looking forward to the adventure and the physical challenge that this experience will bring. With my training regime just starting I’m beginning to realise that I have some work to do and possibly a few pounds to lose! However I’m confident that I’ll be ready and up for “the race” with my colleagues Daphne & Randal. Our aim is to raise as much as we can collectively so please give generously for this great charity. Thank you”

Randal McAllister – “Little left to say now but time to get on with much needed training, everyone who knows me will recognise my robust stature may need to shed several pounds if I’m to make it from start to finish. So please don't hesitate give graciously and I'll do you proud, it's not a race technically but who's kidding who? Many thanks”.

Daphne Greer – “To all my potential sponsors- be assured every pound you donate will not only go to a truly worthwhile cause ‘Save the Children’ but it will also motivate me to make an extra ordinary effort to get off my seat in front of the computer and onto my bicycle seat, so please donate generously, it will be directly converted to pedal power on my behalf. The more you donate the more you will make the ‘Accountant’ sweat – a double whammy, your support is greatly appreciated”

Cross Community Recruitment Campaign 19 Jan 2013

Following discussions at General Committee, the Club is undertaking a new initiative to recruit new playing members specifically from across all communities in the Armagh City and District area.

The background to the initiative is that we need to strengthen the playing base in our club for the next 3 – 5 years. Players naturally retire over time and we need to ensure that we are doing our best to make sure a new crop of players will be there to step in and take their place. This applies at all team levels, not just First Fifteen.

The Club therefore has agreed to launch a recruitment campaign with three primary targets:

1) Youth players

2) Girls

3) Adults over 18s

Specifically we are targeting boys and girls from non-rugby playing schools from all sections of the community.

Our mini and youth sections currently have players regularly attending from an incredible 47 local schools. We need to maintain this and expand it further.

Shirley Ann Donaldson is currently working on reviving the ladies/girls section within the Club.

We therefore have a focus to recruit girls 12 – 18 years of age for both tag and contact rugby.

Training for U18 girls is on Monday night from 7.00pm – 8.15pm and our objective is to develop teams at U15 and U18 level.

For adult over 18 players, we want to target guys who stopped playing rugby after leaving school and to encourage them to take the game up again at a social level.

Our primary target however are those guys with no experience of rugby at all and specifically from the non-traditional rugby community who want to try their hand at rugby. The profile of rugby has never been higher given the positive media coverage of Ulster Rugby and Ireland.

Thirdly, we have a large number of immigrant workers in the Armagh area from countries such as Poland, Lithuania etc and these tend to be young males in the age group ideal for playing rugby. They are interested in keeping fit and may be encouraged to try rugby as a team sport.

How are we going to do all this?

Mark Riddell is our Club Community Rugby Officer and he will be playing a key role. His mobile number is 07795 445302.

Our strategy is to arrange ‘beginner’ sessions for those people with no experience of rugby at all. Youth players will be directed to Wednesday night training applicable to their age group and the appropriate youth coaching staff will accommodate new recruits accordingly.

Similarly, girls will be directed to the Monday night training sessions and any enquiries can be co-ordinated by Shirley-Ann.

Any adult players who make contact will be advised by Mark, when the beginner sessions will be taking place.

After a few weeks it would be hoped that some players would be ready to play for the Fourth Fifteen and they would integrate into regular training for players at that level.

PROMOTIONAL STRAGEGY

So how are we going to publicise our message?

Already we have designed and printed a large number of posters with the simple message ‘Play Rugby”. See below:

We are looking to place these posters in schools throughout the Armagh area to further expand our youth catchment area.

We will also be placing the posters in shops, cafes, pubs, gyms etc, not only in Armagh, but in the surrounding towns and villages such as Newtownhamilton, Keady, Middletown, Markethill, Caledon, Blackwatertown, and Moy, etc.

We will also be producing versions in the Polish, Lithuanian and Portuguese languages for shops and venues serving the immigrant community.

Can you help place posters in your local shop?

Do you know a teacher in a school who would put up a poster?

Contact Ian McCall for posters, telephone 07967 097128.

In addition, the Club has also broken new ground in Ulster Rugby by using billboard advertising to promote their recruitment campaign.

We will be advertising on two billboards in November and December, firstly on the Killylea Road in Armagh, and secondly on the Loughgall Road in the city. The locations have been carefully selected to reach the communities we are trying to target.

Below is the poster design:

The third element of our strategy is the Internet and social media.

Our club website (www.armaghrfc.com) and Facebook page (facebook.com/city.of.armagh.rugby.club), as well as our Twitter page (twitter.com/armaghrugbyclub), will play important roles in spreading the word on what we are trying to do.

We will plan as much activity and updates as possible to keep the campaign to the fore. Facebook members and our Twitter followers will be able to share our poster designs and information about our campaign to their friends and networks. For those on Linkedin, use this also as a tool to promote the Club’s message.

Finally, Public Relations.

We will be endeavouring to maximise the PR opportunities of our campaign at various levels.

Firstly our PRO, Ken Redpath, will be liaising with both our two local newspapers for editorial coverage.

We will be looking for the Ulster Gazette to carry an interview with Mark Riddell, our Rugby Development Officer. Mark will discuss his role with local schools but importantly, also to reach out to adult players, particularly from the communities we are looking to target.

We have already taken PR photographs with Tommy Bowe with Club officials for a press release to local media.

In addition to local press, we will be looking for PR coverage with Intouch Rugby and Emerald Rugby magazine.

Lastly, we will be looking for PR assistance from Ulster Rugby at Branch level. In addition to coverage on their website, we will also be looking for visits from high profile Ulster Rugby players to local schools and possible events at the Club.

Summary

This new recruitment venture is a first for the Club and it needs the help of all our members to make it a success. Word of mouth marketing is the best form of advertising. Now that you know what the Club is trying to do, do what you can to help. Spread the word, put up posters and offer any assistance you can.

Success is measured by results. More players at every age will strengthen the club and lay solid foundations for the future. Captains and team managers will have more players to call upon for matches. Can we aim for a Fifth adult team in the next few years?

Lets make City of Armagh Rugby Club, the top Club in Ulster!

ULSTER MINI RUGBY FESTIVAL @ City of Armagh 16 MoVember 2012

Ulster Rugby Mini Festival @ City-of Armagh Rugby-Club

Sat 17 Nov 2012

Rugby in Ulster is enjoying increasing popularity and today’s grassroots event is a welcome initiative from Ulster Rugby and the sponsors Domino’s.

The popularity of rugby in Armagh is evident as there are currently 247 registered players within City of Armagh’s Mini Rugby structure. Luckily, Armagh has over 30 volunteers to coach and support the young players and events like today will hopefully fuel the enthusiasm for the P3 group.

City of Armagh Rugby Club welcomes all visitors to our facilities at the Palace Grounds and we hope you enjoy the Mini event. For Domino's Armagh we also hope the event provides the exposure for your brand that it deserves, as club rugby depends upon support from companies like yourselves.

For all the young players I hope the event provides you and your supporters with fond memories.

Message from the Club President 01 Sept 2012

It is a great honour and privilege to be the President of the City of Armagh Rugby Club for the 2012 - 2013 season.

Our 1st XV in their first season back in the All Ireland League, exceeded expectations by finishing in 6th place and the players and coaches deserve great credit for their commitment and dedication.

We all know that a rugby club relies on all teams that take the field, irrespective of playing ability or age.
