Community Cup - Banbridge vs Lurgan

23rd November 2007

With Newry forced to withdraw from the U16 match due to a flu outbreak at the clu , only Banbridge and Lurgan U14s were at The Palace Grounds to contest the third of the Quarter Finals in this years Community Cup.

Both teams played a contrasting style of rugby , with Lurgan attempting to dominate through the forwards, and Banbridge eager to run the ball along their backline at every opportunity. This approach, coupled with some missed tackles from the Lurgan defence, gave Banbridge the upper hand early on and they quickly registered 2 tries, one of which was converted.

Despite a spell of pressure from Lurgan, determined Banbridge defence held them at bay, and they quickly bounced back with two more quick tries and a conversion to lead 24-0 at the interval.

The second half was more fragmented, and disrupted by a lengthy injury break for one of the Lurgan forwards. Some determined Lurgan play saw them finally get on the scoreboard but Banbridge had the last word with the final try leaving the result in their favour at 29-05. Much credit goes to both sides, and to Lurgan for their spirited defence and determination.

However Banbridge, mainly through a very exciting pair of half backs, controlled most of the game and were good value for their victory.

Banbridge go forward now to the Semi Final stage in both age groups where they will meet the winners of next weeks Armagh / Randalstown clashes.
