This weeks Community Cup action only focused on the U14 section. Due to an injury crisis Letterkenny were forced to withdraw from the U16 section, allowing Newry to progress to the Quarter Finals.
At U14 Newry played Lurgan and those present were treated by an excellent game of rugby, pitting a large Lurgan side against a more inexerienced Newry 15. Despite some early surges from the Lurgan forwards, Newry were first to score when their right winger avoided 3 or 4 tackles to score in the corner and when they did the same on the other wing some minutes later Newry were deservedly 10-0 in front. Lurgan came back well with 2 quick tries to level the game and with each side scoring again the half time whistle was blown with the sides level at 15-15.
In the second half the size and experience of the Lurgan team came to the fore as they got the lead and extended it, even kicking the one successful conversion on the night. Four more tries were added to the Lurgan score during the second period to only one for Newry as Lurgan ran out 37-20 winners and go forward to play Banbridge on 21st November. Newry U16 will play Banbridge U16 on the same night.
