Ballynahinch vs Monaghan

15th October 2007

Monday last, 15th October, saw the latest instalment in this years Community Cup with Ballynahinch going head to head with Monaghan.

Both matches were keenly contested affairs, but in the U14 game Monaghan proved more adept at taking the chances that came their way. After a tight first half just shaded by Monaghan ,some strong running and good forward play saw Monaghan move away from their opponents, finally winning by 40 points to 3, although a couple of late scores led to a slightly unbalanced score. Monaghan go forward now to play last years winners, Enniskillen.

In the U16 game, a very strong Monaghan pack were dominant through most of the game. Despite a monopoly on possession however, strong Hinch defence held them at bay and Monaghan were only able to score one penalty in the first period. The same pattern continued into the second half with Monaghans forwards exerting pressure on the Hinch pack but as time went on it seemed that Hinch might snatch an unlikely draw when they won and converted a penalty with 5 minutes to go.

Monaghan responded strongly and were brought up inches short of a try by a fine last ditch tackle . However, they were not to be denied and a strong individual run from their number 8 saw Monaghan score under the posts with the last move of the match. The try was converted, leaving Monaghan winners by 10 points to 3 and ensuring that a new name will be on the U16 Cup this year.
