The annual Rugby-Gaelic match between Armagh rugby and Pearse Ogs Gaelic Club was played on Friday 13 th October at the Palace Grounds.
This unique game is played for the Happy Hooker Cup, in memory of Donal Powell, and consists of one half played to Rugby laws and one half of Gaelic football. The Ogs are the current holders of the cup. |
This competition between Pearse Ogs and Armagh Rugby Club dates back to the 90's when the Ogs had been using the Palace grounds for training purposes for some time.
Since both the clubs were familiar with the pitches and several players were then (as now) playing both codes a game of rugby was organised.
The Ogs won the first game with a great try by Paul Grimley. Donal Powell played for the Ogs in that game but died in a tragic accident soon afterwards.

Cheque Presented To Order of Malta |
From the beginning the Order Of Malta Ambulance Corps has been the recipient of all funds collected, mainly from programme advertising, since they are very welcome at tenders at both club's matches.
Indeed, a game at the Palace Grounds can scarcely kick-off until the arrival of The Order Of Malta ambulance. This annual event displays the active cross-community policy which is promoted throughout the Armagh club.
As can be seen from the attached image the Order of Malta received a cheque for £2700.00 this year. |
