Armagh Dream Team (18) vs Dromore 4th XV (08)

26th November 2007

Armagh were on the road again last Wednesday when they travelled to Dromore for a tough midweek game.

With various players unavailable due to work commitments, Armagh fielded a much changed side from the one which crushed Dungannon at the Palace grounds the previous Saturday. Dromore started strongly and had a couple of chances to open the scoring, but the Armagh defence held firm.  Once Armagh's pack had run off the car journey, they eventually gained some quality possession and after a succession of driving mauls, Dromore were penalised for collapsing and Davy Nicholson kicked to the corner.

Armagh almost scored from the line-out, but the ball was turned over and Dromore managed to kick free up-to the Armagh twenty-two. This seemed to inspire Dromore and they scored an unconverted try.  Armagh managed to keep their line intact to go in at half-time only 5 points adrift.

The second half proved to be the turning point for Armagh and they were able to bring on Ian McCall and Neil Agnew. Their fresh legs enabled the pack to exert increased pressure on the Dromore eight and with Webster dominant in the line-outs Armagh were able to kick for good field position.  Armagh gained a scrum in the Dromore half and No. 8 Waldo was able to pickup and outstrip the defence to score near the posts.

Davy Nicholson converted and he was on the score sheet soon after with one of his customary drop goals from 30 metres out.  Armagh were now starting to dominate and a clever switch of play by Hazelton and a half break from the lively Nicholson saw the ball moved wide for Armagh to score an unconverted try

Armagh now closed the game out with the forwards maintaining possession for long periods and the half-backs kept the ball in Dromore's half with some well placed kicks.  Dromore continued to play open rugby, but when they were caught off-side at a ruck, Davy Nicholson stepped up to convert the penalty and seal the points for Armagh.

This now leaves the team with a 4 point lead in the league over Dungannon and their unbeaten run intact.

Their next fixture is in The McCambley cup at home to Holywood 3rds XV on Saturday 08th December.
