The dream team won their first home league match of the season when they travelled to Lurgan and beat the home team by three tries to one. Armagh played with a much changed side bringing in Bob Bell, Phil Simms, Nigel Speers, Glen Morton, Johnny Robinson, Locky Nesbitt and Stephen Menary. Trevor Greer also made a guest appearance in the centre joining Stan Hamilton with Nial Chapman moving to full back.
Armagh won the toss and elected to play into the wind in the first half and soon came under pressure from a fired up Lurgan team.
However, with Ian Webster and Nigel Speers doing sterling work in the lineout the pack soon began to function and win some good ball. However, it was Lurgan who opened the scoring when a clearance kick in the Armagh 22 was charged down and one of the Lurgan forwards won the race to the touchdown.
The conversion was missed and that left the half time score 5-0 in Lurgan's favour.
In the second Davy Nicholson with his trusty right boot began to peg Lurgan back into their twenty two and Armagh soon began to pile on the pressure. Stan Hamilton made a delightful break after winning good ruck ball and burst through three tackles to score at the posts.
Davy Nicholson kicked the conversion to put the dream team into the lead. Lurgan soon came storming back and kicked an easy penalty to restore their lead before Davy Nicholson replied with one for Armagh.
Armagh then brought on super-sub Locky Nesbit who immediately made an impression breaking from a ruck and heading for the line only to be pulled back for a blocking infringement.
Following a lineout on the Lurgan five metre line a great catch and drive by Ian Webster allowed Michael Henry to get the touchdown.
The dream team were not finished yet and following a drive off a scrum in the Lurgan 22 Locky Nesbitt took a scoring pass to round off the Armagh win.
This was a very good performance from a much changed Armagh side that took some time to settle down and play as a team but showed in the second half that given good ball they are very capable of playing some excellent rugby. The man of the match award went to bob bell but overall everyone played their part. |
