Armagh made the journey to Coleraine to play the local seconds on Friday night. Straight from the kick off Coleraine gained possession and moved the ball through their backs. Armagh’s defence held out from prolonged Coleraine attacking play in the 22 and found it hard to gain possession of the ball.
Coleraine kicked an early penalty and scored a try after 20 minutes Coleraine to give them an 08–0 lead.
At this stage the Armagh forwards asserted themselves and started making inroads into the Coleraine half. From a 30 metre break by Steven Morton, Armagh gained a lineout 5 metres out and after taking the ball cleanly the pack mauled the ball towards the line for Philip Fletcher to dart through and score a good try.
Shortly afterwards Coleraine kicked a penalty to leave the half time score 11–05 to Coleraine.
The second half started with Simon Cuttle converting a penalty to narrow the score to 11–08 and the Armagh 15 were now determined to raise their game. However Coleraine’s busy backs were still running the ball at every opportunity and from one attack their No 10 dropped a goal from 35 metres to make the score 14–08 to Coleraine.
The Armagh forwards attacked again, however when possession was turned over the astute Coleraine No 10 returned the ball with interest into the Armagh half. He dropped another goal and converted a late try to leave the final score 24-08 to Coleraine.
This was a disappointing result for the City side as they had the personnel on the pitch to give a better account of themselves against a strong Coleraine side. Stuart Lester despite picking up a knee injury early on bravely stayed on the pitch to the end of the game. |
