Armagh 2nd XV (57) vs Ballyclare 3rd XV (05)

22nd September 2007

Armagh Seconds kept up their 100 per cent record for the season with another great victory at the Palace Grounds on Saturday. The team started well and immediately showed their dominance by keeping the Ballyclare defence pinned in their own half.

It took five minutes for Armagh to open the scoring when winger Mark Laverty rounded his opposite number and drew the covering defence to put full back Sam Sheppard in near the corner. Try number two came in the first 20 minutes when a kick was charged down and flanker Brian Birch was able to win the race to the touchdown. Andrew Knipe was also able to cross the
Ballyclare line for the third score.

The Armagh front row took a scrum against the head which led to Chris Wallace scoring his first try of the day. Further good set piece play led to Mark Laverty using his pace on the outside to score in the corner. Ballyclare did manage to turn some ill discipline and poor organisation in
the Armagh defence into their only points of the game.

The final score of the first half came from Chris Wallace who collected a loose pass and used his pace to skin the opposition full back to score from 70 metres. The second half began brightly and Richard Shilliday was first to score from a powerful individual run through the heart of the Ballyclare defence. Almost from the restart Armagh brought play right back to the Ballyclare line and Simon Cuttle was on hand to score near the posts.

As the Armagh pack further dominated Shilliday made another great run and this time linked with his supporting players who put Phil McAllister away for the final score of the game. With 23 minutes to go the game was called up early. Alan Whitcroft had another good display both in passing and kicking game with a personal contribution of six conversions.
