City of Armagh Second XV made their debut in the Senior 2nd fifteen league on Saturday when they entertained Ards 2s at the Palace Grounds.
They quickly settled into the pace of playing in a higher league and after good work by the forwards, Robert Straghan scored out wide after 10 minutes to give Armagh an early lead of 05–0.
Soon after, Jeffrey Dougan playing at 10, sliced through from 25 metres to cross over at the posts. Andrew Knipe added the conversion which brought the score to 12 – 0.
Ards upped their game and converted a penalty after taking play deep into the Armagh half. Just before half time Robbie Faloon powered over for a good try out wide. Knipe converted to bring the score to 19–03.
On the restart, Armagh’s forwards led by Bassett, McNeice and Fletcher continued to dominate their opposite numbers. The backs were moving the ball at every opportunity with Jeffrey Dougan pulling the strings and the centre partnership of Simon Cuttle and Straghan being very influential.
Matty Allen and Robbie Faloon were sound defensively and threatening in attack. Further tries were added by Chris Wallace after a 40 metre break, Robert Straghan scoring at the posts after a neat line break and slick hands from Knipe put Paddy Steed over in the corner.
With the conversions by Knipe, the final score was 40-03 to the home side.
This was a good early season performance from the 2s with Coach David Eakin pleased with the commitment from 1 to 15.
